John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness,
preaching repentance, forgiveness of sins.
People came out of the cities and towns to be
plunged into cleanliness when they heard him.

John wore rough clothing and ate like a pauper but
spoke of one coming much better than he.
One whose baptism would do more than clean things up.
One with the Spirit to make people free.

Jesus of Nazareth came to the river where
John was baptizing and asked to be done.
When he stood up from the water the Spirit came ,
and heaven’s voice cried out, THIS IS THE ONE!
