Sometimes Lying Helps

A king arose who didn’t know his nation’s history.

He feared the ones who did the work and brought prosperity.

—–

He and his court (a small cohort), attempting to be shrewd,

With no finesse and great duress oppressed with labor crude.

—–

The more the worked the more they bred and multiplied and spread

The king and his minority regarded them with dread.

—–

Someone thought, then, to cut off men, leave women for their use.

But two midwives, by telling lies, saved babies from abuse.

—–

To kill adults was an insult, so starting with the kids,

a penalty of death on boys was what some people did.
