Stamina

The child grew, and when he was weaned his father made a feast.

We don’t know how his mother felt; it wasn’t kind, at least.

She saw her rival’s child at play with her belov-ed one.

A green-eyed monster seized her heart. She said, “This thing is done.”

—–

Out to the desert they were sent, the rival and her son,

because the line of Abraham went through the other one.

From thirst they cried and nearly died, but heaven heard their voice.

An angel calmed the mother’s heart. Her son was, too, God’s choice.

—–

She spied a well of water there, and gave the boy a drink.

He grew up in the wilderness and learned to hunt and think.

When he was grown his mother found a wife from Africa.

A nation, great, from them was made; the ones with stamina.
