Holy and Loved

As God’s chosen people, both holy and loved,

compassion suffusing your souls,

In kindness, humility, gentleness clothed,

may you wait patiently for the Lord.

—–

Forgive ev’ry grievance that’s found in your midst,

in measure akin to the Lord.

Above ev-ry-thing put on love as your crown

as together by Jesus you’re bound.

—–

Your hearts should be ruled by the peace Jesus gave.

In Christ now one body you are.

In peace you were called, so be thankful in all.

May Christ’s word richly dwell in your hearts.

—–

By wisdom and grace may your teaching be known.

Sing psalms, hymns and songs in your hearts.

Whatever you do, both in word and in deed,

do with thanks in the name of the Lord.

Grew in Wisdom and in Stature

Not some years, but every year, they went up to Jerusalem.

When their son was twelve years old he traveled right along with them.

Having worshipped in the temple and fulfilled their duty, then,

parents turned their faces homeward. Jesus lingered with some men.

—–

Thinking him among their kinfolk, on the road they walked a day.

When they missed him, made a search and then retraced the road they came.

Three days later, in the temple, found him with the wise and sage.

Where he sat in conversation with folks far beyond his age.

—–

All who heard him were astonished by the ways and words he spoke.

When his mother scolded him he told them that they should have known.

He returned to Nazareth where he was subject unto them.

Grew in wisdom, stature and in favor with both God and men.

When Kings of Empires Reigned

When kings of empires reigned, and ordered folks around

Augustus Caesar ordered all to their home towns.

So Joseph, carpenter, went south to Bethlehem,

And took the pregnant Mary there along with him.

—–

Her time came to give birth while they were far from home.

A stable served, for at the inn there was no room.

Her first-born son she wrapped in strips of cloth, and lay

the savior of the world upon a bed of hay.

—–

Some shepherds in the fields, out caring for their flocks

Saw angel visions, and heard voices praising God.

At first they were afraid, but when they got the news,

they hurried to the place where Jesus could be viewed.

—–

And Mary, blest by God, remembered in her heart.

She deeply pondered all that happened from the start.

Like shepherds let us sing of what the Lord has done

‘til all of heav’n and earth below are made as one.

Walkers in Darkness

Walkers in darkness have seen a great light.

Into dark dwellings a new light has shined.

Nations have multiplied, joy has increased.

This is God’s blessing; that we live in peace.

—–

As at a harvest, before God rejoice.

As finding treasure; now lift up your voice.

Burdens are lifted, oppressors are gone.

This, too, God’s blessing to all of God’s own.

O Bethlehem of Ephratah

O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, though you are small within Judah,

yet out of you shall come as well the one to rule all Is-ra-el.

—–

His origin is from of old, from ancient days, it has been told.

Yet when his mother gives him birth, his kin will come from all the earth.

—–

In God’s own strength and majesty the flock of Is-ra-el he’ll feed.

In peace and safety they will live and glory unto God they’ll give.

Lord, Lend an Ear

From far off in heaven, O Lord, lend an ear,

You led us before, but we misbehaved.

The angels surround you. It’s not like that here.

Restore us, O God. Shine your face, make us saved.

—–

How long will your anger respond to our prayers?

Our enemies laugh, and they are depraved.

The news that we get is of failure and scares.

Restore us, O God. Shine your face, make us saved.

—–

Our ancestors settled in other folks’ space.

We call ourselves free, we name ourselves brave.

We’re deeply divided by genders and race.

Restore us, O God. Shine your face, make us saved.

—–

We’ve trusted in oceans and agents and walls.

We crumble inside, from what we became.

The beastliness that we had hidden now calls.

Restore us, O God. Shine your face, make us saved.

—–

So turn again, look down from heaven and see,

the people you made, the love you displayed.

We’re no longer brave, and we’re no longer free.

Restore us, O God. Shine your face, make us saved.

—–

Please gather us back to a place at your side,

Redeem us from weakness and from disgrace.

We’ll never turn back for in you is our life.

Restore us, O God. Shine your face, make us saved.

By God’s Will, We’ve Been Sanctified

By God’s will we’ve been sanctified, in what was done by Christ.

His body offered once for all. He made the sacrifice.

—–

Animal blood cannot suffice, to take away our sin.

Such off-er-ings God does not want, neither takes pleasure in.

—–

Jesus has come to do God’s will, as long ago was writ.

Wiping away the former law, making an end of it.

—–

By God’s will we’ve been sanctified, in what was done by Christ.

His body offered once for all. He made the sacrifice.

Magnify the Holy One

Magnify the Lord, all souls! Ev’ry spirit, shout with joy!

God has favored, we’ve been blessed. God does great without alloy.

Holy is the Mighty One; merciful to all who fear.

Showing strength with a great arm, scat-’ring proud folks far from here.

—–

Kings and tyrants are brought down, and the lowly take the throne.

Hungry find their bellies filled, rich folks find their wishes stilled.

Mercies we’ve remembered not, God’s completed ev’ry jot.

Evermore those vows will hold. We can go on living. BOLD!

When Mary Went Into the Hills

When Mary went into the hills, the town where her old cousin dwelt,

The virgin’s voice within the room caused John to leap within the womb.

—–

Elizabeth, with Spirit filled, cried out exclaiming to the hills,

“Among all women Mary’s blessed, the child within her womb’s the best!”

—–

“And I as well. Why? I don’t know. I’m blessed that you’ve come to my door.”

May all who meet with Mary’s son rejoice in what the Lord has done.

The Enemies of Enemies

The enemies of enemies can sometimes seem like friends.

Some Pharisees sought Jesus out, a warning to portend.

He knew what they were after (which was scare him out of town),

so called the king a fox before he quickly doubled down.

—–

He knew these guys for who they were, and what their mission was.

But also knew his destiny, and went ahead because

the long-term end of his intent could not be left undone.

And blessed are all who follow and who in the Lord’s name come.
