Trumpet and Gong

When you’ve been pious for the sake of others,

you’ve no reward from God who dwells on high.

When you give alms, avoid the public eye.

Trumpet and gong, will only stoke your pride.

—–

Give lavishly, and do it all in secret.

God who has seen, will issue the rewards.

Pray that way too, not loud and proud for show.

Pray’rs that God hears, are silent to the hordes.

—–

Fasting, as well, is best when done in private.

Don’t make a big thing of your stomach’s need.

Telling the world, what you have self-denied,

shorts out the good that you want to receive.

—–

Treasures on earth, where rot and rust consume them,

where thieves break in and sweep it all away.

Look unto God, and place your treasure where

your heart will be, and where it will be safe.
