We somewhere got the notion that God cares about OUR comfort,
to please our ears and eyes as we bow, speaking vain confessions.
We yearn for signs of heavenly approval for our effort,
neglecting people all around who suffer our oppressions.
—–
If fasting only gives you strength for quarreling and fighting
it will not be of benefit with your Lord, God Almighty.
A humble bow, a day of pray’r, a burlap suit and ashes
are not the things that God desires, in fact, they’re what God trashes.
—–
So loosen up, untie the yokes of bondage and injustice.
Share bread with poor and hungry folks and soften up your bluster.
Your light will break forth like the dawn, your healing spring up quickly.
Before, behind, the Lord will go to guard you very strictly.
—–
The Lord will hear your call and answer with strong affirmation.
So banish accusation and oppression from your nation.
The light will shine, your darkness fade and strength will be recovered.
Your ancient places be rebuilt and you will have new neighbors.
