When Kings and Empires Reigned

The Nativity (1480s) by Antoniazzo Romano. Original from The MET Museum. Digitally enhanced by rawpixel.

When kings and empire reigned, and ordered folks around

Augustus Caesar ordered all to their home towns.

So Joseph, carpenter, went south to Bethlehem

And took the pregnant Mary there along with him.

—–

Her time came to give birth while they were far from home.

A stable served for at the inn there was no room.

Her first-born son she wrapped in strips of cloth, and lay

the savior of the world upon a bed of hay.

—–

Some shepherds in the fields, out caring for their flocks

Saw angel visions, and heard voices praising God.

At first they were afraid, but when they got the news,

they hurried to the place where Jesus could be viewed.

—–

And Mary blest by God, remembered in her heart,

She deeply pondered all that happened from the start.

Like shepherds let us sing of what the Lord has done

‘Til all of heav’n and earth below are made as one.
