The Scepter Arose (Esther 5)

Beholding his queen in her finest of robes,

the king was enticed, and his scepter arose.

She, sensing his favor, demurely approached;

the tip of the scepter her fingers enclosed.

—–

“Whatever you wish, you will surely receive.

Full half of my kingdom, if you can believe.”

“Not much,” she replied, “lunch with you and your friend.

Today, and tomorrow we’ll do it again.”

—–

The friend was elated to dine with the queen.

Believing his worthiness now had been seen.

He planned with his cronies to settle a score,

by hanging the man he could stomach no more.
