At a Time Like This

Orders for a nation’s death, like others to evacuate,

draw responses like remorse or protests at the palace gate.

Even to the Harem word was sent to get the thing undone,

but a woman’s place meant nothing lest the king would bid her come.

—–

“Such position as you hold by means of beauty and of sex,

gives you no advantage or protection at a time like this.”

Calling people bound and free to fast and offer ardent prayer;

risking loss of life she planned to break the law because she cared.
