A Competent Authority

When we’re suspected of a crime, investigation starts.

A competent authority examines all the parts.

Though what appears at first to be the thing that will convict

through closer sight someone may find a reason to acquit.

—–

But innocence from one offense does not mean we’re immune.

from doing wrong another time, and even very soon.

Called back again on evidence of some deficiency

it may be found that we’re unsound, incurring penalty.
