Whenever You are Tempted to Imagine

Whenever you are tempted to imagine yourself good,

remember that the ancients who took holy orders stood

around a bull of sacrifice with hands upon its head,

admitting their own need to get the sin within them shed.

—–

The process wasn’t pleasant, neither was it very neat.

The altar and the ground around got bloody, and the heat

and smoke and smells were strong so some things had to be removed.

When all was said and done the work of holiness ensued.
