A Mother’s Thoughts on Intoxicants

To be in charge is glorious,

though in some ways it’s onerous.

Sobriety is de rigueur

because when drunk you may pervert

the rights of those you rose to serve.

Be diligent, and do not swerve.

—–

For those whose death is soon to come

strong drink has use to soothe and numb

the misery and sore distress

that makes what’s left of life a mess.

So give them wine and let them dream,

their path unto eternity.
