The vineyard overgrown by thorns with nettles on the ground,
its unused wine press at one side and stone wall broken down;
taught me a lesson, as I passed, of someone I could be,
if leisure seized my time and want became my company.
With folded hands, not for a pray’r, but just to take a rest,
his power to preserve for better meeting coming tests.
Don’t say he’s lazy; he’s prepared! Like everyone he knows
that robbers lurk, prepared, wherever honest people go.
